Two Lionel Messi assists completes incredible comeback for Inter Miami in US Open Cup

Lionel Messi’s two superb assists propelled Inter Miami into extra time in the US Open Cup semi-finals.

Since joining the Jorge Mas and David Beckham co-owned team in the United States, the World Cup winner has yet to lose a game.

The Miami team had been on an outstanding run since the Argentine signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in July.

Seven consecutive victories, including the first League Cup triumph in their team’s history, signaled a brilliant start to life with Messi in their ranks.

Messi’s team had not looked up to par when they faced FC Cincinnati in the US Open Cup semi-finals.

It was a quick turnaround from playing Nashville in the Leagues Cup final four days earlier.

Cincinnati took the lead in the first half thanks to Luciano Acosta and remained dominant throughout.

They extended their lead in the 53rd minute thanks to Brandon Vazquez, and Miami appeared to be out of the cup.

Messi, as he has done so many times before, pulled out all the stops to get his team back into the game.

In the 68th minute, Miami was awarded a free kick, and the Argentinian stepped up to whip in a fantastic pass that reached the head of Leonardo Campana and into the goal.

Cincinnati appeared to be on their way to a big win, but Messi had other plans.

The former Barcelona star collected the ball approximately 35 yards from goal and blasted in an unbelievable ball over the top and into the head of Campana to equalize for Miami.

The equalizer occurred in the 97th minute, forcing extra time in the semi-final.
