Antoine Griezmann scored a great goal in the 100th minute to end a wild, six-goal Madrid derby cup last-16 game that began Thursday night and ended early Friday morning.

It rained goals and yellow cards, but the man who was honored before the game for already being Atletico’s all-time top scorer made the most important play.

In the first half of extra time, Griezmann had a pretty quiet night, but he took off down the right wing away from Vinicius, who was desperately trying to make up for losing the ball and fired the ball into the roof of Andriy Lunin’s net. Everyone else around him was out of gas at that point.

Atletico got payback on Real Madrid for beating them 5-3 in the Spanish Super Cup just five days before this goal. But Real Madrid was out of the cup.

In the first part of the long, rough game, Real Madrid had the upper hand. When Bellingham danced around Axel Witsel and Rodrigo de Paul to get past Atletico Madrid’s defense, his shot hit the post.

Atletico took the lead five minutes before halftime when Rodrigo de Paul’s cross hit Griezmann in the head, making it harder for Antonio Rudiger to clear the ball. Madrid was ahead at the time. He could only clear the ball to Samu Lino, who scored behind Lunin. The lead didn’t last long because Luka Modric crossed the ball into the area right before halftime. The three of them jumped at the same time, and Oblak hit his net with his punch as he came in behind them.

On the field, Vinicius celebrated in front of the Atletico fans. He had already been booked for moaning to the referee, Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez, about a ball boy throwing a second ball onto the field while Real Madrid tried to take a quick throw.

When such close enemies are forced to play each other several times in a short amount of time, they always feel bad about each other. Things were getting heated, and Bellingham was very angry when Lino tried to book Vinicius right before he got a yellow card. 

When Bellingham’s arm touched the Atletico wing-back in the face, he fell like he had been hit. Bellingham ran over to him and picked him up.

After moving past three Atletico players in the home team’s area to start the second half, Bellingham did the same thing he did to start the first. This time, he crossed the ball into the six-yard box, but no one was there to finish it.

During Simeone’s time in charge, all seven one-leg cup matches against Real Madrid had gone to extra time, and it looked like this one would too. But Alvaro Morata had other thoughts. Around the 58th minute, he put Atletico back ahead.

Eduardo Camavinga turned Marcos Llorente’s pass toward the goal. Even though Lunin came out, he didn’t catch the lost ball. Instead, he tried to push it back into play, but Rudiger was already there, so his clearance hit him and rolled to Morata, who pushed it over the line for his 18th goal of the season across all categories.

The spark was lit for another heated period, during which replacement Brahim Diaz was sent off for defending himself against Hermoso, who had already been sent off for fouling him.As things got more exciting, Vinicius played two games at once: one with the ball and one with the Atletico players and fans. He heard something that Hermoso said in his ear. Another time, he did something stupid and Ancelotti gave him a long, critical stare.

The ball boys and girls were back at it again at the same time. The judge talked to the home team’s bench because he thought they were wasting time.

To add a 15th minute, Rodrygo hit the bar as Madrid got closer to another goal.

Now the tactical mistakes and cards were coming at a very fast rate. Real Madrid got a free kick on the edge of the area after Koke was flagged for pushing, but Toni Kroos, who came on as a replacement, couldn’t make the most of it.

Joselu came on as well, and with seven minutes left, he tied the game for Real Madrid. Vinicius passed it to Bellingham, who made a beautiful cross to the big center forward. Joselu jumped at it and hit it hard enough to beat Oblak and tie the game at 2-2.

Simeone got a ticket for talking about how loud Vinicius was celebrating, and he went after the Brazilian after the game was over to make his point even stronger.
