Green fingers aren’t for everyone.
Worry not, these beautiful and low-maintenance plants will look great in any home.
They don’t need a lot of light to thrive and, to a degree, cope well with neglect.
1. Alocasia Silver Dragon
A tropical plant originally from southeast Asia, where they grow on jungle floors with little to no light.
The Alocasia Silver Dragon needs plenty of humidity and doesn’t cope well in low temperatures. This delicate and rare to find house plant, requires indirect light, out of reach of the sun’s direct rays.
2. Bromeliads
This houseplant can survive with artificial lighting, so is perfect for bathrooms or rooms without windows. Low maintenance, it does not require a lot of watering and can survive drought-like conditions.
3. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra Elatior)
A hardy plant that tolerates well a variety of conditions, such as low-light environments.
They grow at a very slow rate but don’t require much maintenance. Avoid direct sunlight as it can burn its leaves.
4. Creeping Fig (Ficus Pumila)
Also known as climbing fig, this plant is suitable for indoor and outdoor uses. It is mainly used as a table plant or a hanging plant.
Easy to look after, it needs to be watered when the soil is dry. The creeping fig does need bright light but not direct sunlight.
5. Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake Plant)
Originally from the rainforests of Brazil, it gets its common name from the distinctive markings on its leaves.
Beautiful but demanding house plant that grows well in light shade. It has a specific minimum temperature of 55 F (13 C) requirement that needs be maintained.
6. Devil’s Ivy (Money Plant)
In the wild, it is usually found in forests in south-east Asia where it grows in the deep shade.
It requires little care as a houseplant, and it can purify air polluted with synthetic chemicals from furniture and cleaning solutions.
7. Dracanea (Dragon Tree)
A very popular houseplant originating from Madagascar in Africa. The Dracanea helps purify the air and it can endure a fair amount of neglect.
It does not need daily watering and needs to stay away from direct sun exposure.
8. Fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus Lyrata)
There is some debate between owners over whether or not these plants need direct sunlight.
According to the fiddleleaffigplant.com: “Fiddles actually love full sun IF they’re properly acclimated to it. The problem is that most fiddles sold as houseplants were planted and grown indoors in indirect or artificial light. You can’t put these trees right in full sun or they’ll get sunburned.”
Originally from western Africa, the fiddle-leaf fig tolerates neglect well and is very low maintenance as a result.

10. Maranta Prayer Plant (Maranta Leuconeura)
Called prayer plant because of the way its leaves are wrapped together at dusk, a kind of prayer pose part of a process called nyctinasty.
Maranta Leuconeura does not need direct sunlight and it is a good choice for both expert and beginner growers.
11. Asparagus Fern
Asparagus ferns do best in dappled shade, so it needs to be out of bright sunshine. It thrives in humidity, so a bathroom is the ideal place for it.
12. Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)
The Monstera plant needs very little to no sunlight and can thrive in pretty much any light condition.
It is also considered a natural air purifier, able to remove toxins from the air.
13. Parlor Palm
Chamadorea elegans, also known as Parlor Palm grows easily and does not need much attention and care. You will need to water it only when the soil is dry. It needs little sunlight to survive.
The plant has been included on NASA’s list of 50 indoor plants that clean the air.
14. Peace Lily
A low-maintenance houseplant with glossy green leaves and occasional white flowers. The white ‘petal’ is not a lily but a leaf bract that grows around the yellow bud.
Peace lilies prefer a shady spot in the house.
15. Philodendron
Another popular house plant with a beautiful heart-shaped foliage.
Be warned: they can be toxic to pets and humans if ingested because their leaves and stems are high in calcium oxalate.
A tough plant, it doesn’t require much attention or sunlight and is considered one of the easiest houseplants to grow.
16. Pilea Peperomiodes
Easy to grow, it is also known as the Chinese money plant. It prefers a light spot, but never in direct sunlight.
Even though it doesn’t need much water to thrive, the soil should never dry out.
17. Stromanthe Sanguinea
Also known as Stromanthe Triostar or Triostar. It is found in the South American rainforest, where tall trees block out direct sunlight. Therefore, as a houseplant, it prefers filtered light.
18. Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)
A beautiful evergreen houseplant, it doesn’t have to be directly exposed to sunlight in order to grow.
Like most ferns, it prefers a damp and low-light environment. Ideal for bathrooms where the humidity is high.
19. Snake Plant
Also known as “Viper’s Bowstring hemp,” “Saint George’s Sword” and “Mother-in-law’s tongue”. This house plant doesn’t need much watering and tolerates lack of care well.
The plant is said to release oxygen at night and, according to NASA, snake plants can remove toxins from the air inside your home.
20. Spider plant
Chlorophytum comosum or the spider plant, is one of the most adaptable houseplants
It is easy to grow and can do so in different conditions. Spider plants can be moved outside to a sunny balcony but it cannot be exposed to direct sun light. During the cold weather, it needs to be indoors as it doesn’t cope well with the frosty temperatures.
21. Silver Queen (Aglaonema or Chinese Evergreen)
Silver queens are a variant of evergeen plants, and due to their light green speckled leaves, they prefer low light conditions.
Known to grow between 8 inches to 4 feet in high, these plants are perfect indoor plants as they are sensitive to the cold.
22. Zamioculcas
Low maintenance, the ZZ Plant is one of the hardiest plants around.
They are beautiful to look at with a lush foliage and a bright green color.
23. Zebra Cactus (Haworthia attenuata)
The Zebra cactus needs little water and blooms beautiful white-brown flowers in the summer. It thrives in low light conditions, but occasionally needs to be moved to a more bright environment to prevent yellowing leaves.
